Wine Description
Our Earth Day Wine!
This week, Indie Winemakers is offering hand-crafted, ultra premium artisan wines produced by Coastview Vineyards. This estate syrah is grown in a sustainable, organic vineyard. The wine is fermented with native yeast and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Indie Winemakers has obtained a very small allocation for this featured wine. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
About the Vineyard
This vineyard is in the Gavilan Mountains, between 2,300 and 2,600 feet above sea level on a mix of limestone and granite.
Summary of Tasting Event
The 07 Syrah was tasted on April 19, 2011 by a panel of 5 tasters in a blind tasting format and paired with chinese ribs.
Dont forget to allow the wine to breathe and open up (maybe a splash decant) before consuming. The Syrah has great flavor and balance and could handle another 1-3 years of cellaring.

Tasting Notes
Indie Winemakers' Tasting Notes
Our mission is to provide unbiased opinions of the wine being offered. These notes come from up to 10 guests who tasted this wine in a blind tasting format (wine is concealed so their identity is unknown). Why this format? Tasting blind completely throws out any hype associated with a certain winery, style, price point, etc; it forces the taster to accept what is in the glass without any predetermined notions. Our guests utilize Robert Parker's Glossary of Wine Terms for their comments for consistency purposes. In addition, we utilize the wine aroma wheel to enhance one’s ability to describe the complexity of wine flavor. Notes are posted on this wine during the tasting to ensure they accurately reflect the impressions.
Tasting Notes - 2007 Monterey County Syrah
Our tasting notes include sight, aromatics and palate. For more information, see our Tasting Techniques
- Sight: This wine is dark ruby in color. Huge teardrops with no color variation.
- Aromatics: Dark fruit aromas with blackberries, slightly floral and a slight tobacco, and leather aroma.
- Palate: Very smooth soft mouthfeel, big body and mostly balanced. A bit of tannins were noted in the finish suggesting another year will round out the wine. Will gain complexity and harmony in a few months.
Technical Data
Vintage Description
As an organic farmer, given the potential problems, vigilance is key. To that end, much time was spent among the vines during the growing season. Balance in the vineyard equals balance in the bottle!
Harvested Nov 4 2007. No sulfites were added at this time so an active wild yeast culture was retained on the grape skins. After a 3 day cold soak the juice had a 14 day maceration with 20% being whole cluster. Pressed directly to barrel. Aged on lees for one year. Bottled on the full moon, August 2009.
