About this wine
The Fanucchi Wood Road Vineyard in Russian River Valley has been producing award wining wines for 3 decades. You can judge for yourself why wine professionals have listed Fanucchi Vineyards wines Consistently Excellent (wine & Spirits Magazine), Insider Favorite of Californias top 75 Wines (Food & wine Magazine) & highly sought after by those in the know. (Master sommelier Catherine Fallis: Great Wines You Can Buy Online).
This week, Indie Winemakers is offering a special old vine Zinfandel (planted around 1902) at a third off retail prices. Better yet, these prices include all shipping fees for those who have California shipping addresses.
This Zinfandel has some punch! This is a concentrated full bodied Zinfandel but is still balanced in the old world tradition. It is loaded with ripe black berry fruit, smooth tannins, black pepper and a complexity that just keeps on going! Well crafted and drinking nicely now, it should hold it's flavor and continue to round-out over the next 3-5 years.

Indie Winemakers' Tasting Notes
Our mission is to provide unbiased opinions of the wine being offered. These notes come from up to 10 guests who tasted this wine in a blind tasting format (wine is concealed so their identity is unknown). Why this format? Tasting blind completely throws out any hype associated with a certain winery, style, price point, etc; it forces the taster to accept what is in the glass without any predetermined notions. Our guests utilize Robert Parker's Glossary of Wine Terms for their comments for consistency purposes. In addition, we utilize the wine aroma wheel to enhance one’s ability to describe the complexity of wine flavor. Notes are posted on this wine during the tasting to ensure they accurately reflect the impressions.
Tasting Notes
- MS: Very nice black fruit nose. Has a big, bold zin flavor but is very smooth. Lots of pepper and black cherry on the finish. Long, long finish. Great now but I'd give it another year.
- TC: Big fruit flavor without the heat. Well crafted and balanced, I thought the finish would never end.
- MA: Dark purple in apperance, this wine has a nice light purple rim surrounding it. Fruity but dry with a very-long finish. This wine has a lot of character. Well crafted and drinking well now, it should hold it's flavor and continue to round-out over the next 3-5 years.
- BW: Dark fruit and pepper nose. Very smooth with a long finish. Not sweet, dry. All berries and black pepper in the mouth.
- KW: Great berries and cherry aromas. This is so smooth for a big wine!
- RA: Classic Zinfandel without the heat finish. It has all the fruit flavors balanced with soft tannins and enough acid backbone to make this a great food wine.

Technical Notes - 04 Fanucchi Old Vine Zinfandel
The 100+ year old Fanucchi-Wood Road Vineyard is located on about 20 acres along a slight rise on Wood Road in the Russian River Valley appellation of Sonoma County. It has been hand-tended by Peter Fanucchi for over 37 vintage seasons. The Old Vine Zinfandel vineyard was planted over 100 years ago (long believed 1906 but recent discovery indicates it could easily have been 15 years old by 1906!).
The vines are head trained and have been raised from just above ground level to shoulder height. This modification provides greater sun exposure and air circulation and has reinvigorated the old vines, enhancing the production of incredibly high-quality, truly, old-vine fruit.
About Fanucchi Vineyards
For Peter Fanucchi it all began in 1972 at the ripe old age of 9 years working beside his father Arcangelo, a new vineyard owner at the time, who purchased a very old vineyard property in Sonoma Countys Russian River Valley on Wood Road in Fulton, California. Peter and his father quickly became friends with their veteran wine grape growing neighbors who very graciously taught them traditional viticulture methods which they rigorously employed on the circa 1906 Zinfandel vineyard. They took their lessons very seriously and they studied the art of wine grape growing intensely. As a result of their studies, they began integrating modern viticultural methodologies gathered from a wide array of periodicals to experts into the vineyard along with the astute lessons learned from their legendary neighbors and most importantly observing how it the cultural practices effected the vines in their specific environment on Wood Road.
To this very day, Peter continues to personally attend to the entire Fanucchi Wood Road Vineyard vine by vine. He constantly adapts his farming practices to the current vine & environmental conditions sometimes doing things that even he would previously have thought were absurd all because the conditions require it.
Peters motto is growing in harmony with nature which, simply put, means growing incredible wine grapes in the most earth friendly enviroment. This phrase resides on each and every bottle of wine he produces and his entire being is zeroed in on living this motto. Peter is not a certified organic grower but virtually the only thing lacking is the completion of the reams of paperwork (and money!) required to gain the certification.
