About The Featured Wine
The 2005 Syrah was produced from Kiler Canyon Vineyard, a small single vineyard located on the Westside of Paso Robles. The vineyard is dedicated to Rhone varietals and is planted to specific clones of Syrah and Viognier.
Summary of Tasting Event
This 2005 Syrah was tasted on Oct 10, 2008 by a panel of 7 tasters in a blind tasting format. The winery suggests it be paired with BBQ meat or spicy meat. Carne Guisada con Papas (meat & potatoes) is our suggested pairing for this wine. The recipie is on the Recipie Tab of this page.
This was the groups' favorite wine of the evening. We were all impressed with the full-bodied nature of the wine. More importantly, the bigness did not impact the smoothness of this wine. Look out Hermitage, this has the makings of another "Bottle Shock" story.
We noted classic Syrah characteristics with concentrated flavors of black fruits, raspberry and black pepper. There are subtle oak influences on this wine. A long finish.

Indie Winemakers' Tasting Notes
Our mission is to provide unbiased opinions of the wine being offered. These notes come from up to 10 guests who tasted this wine in a blind tasting format (wine is concealed so their identity is unknown). Why this format? Tasting blind completely throws out any hype associated with a certain winery, style, price point, etc; it forces the taster to accept what is in the glass without any predetermined notions. Our guests utilize Robert Parker's Glossary of Wine Terms for their comments for consistency purposes. In addition, we utilize the wine aroma wheel to enhance one’s ability to describe the complexity of wine flavor. Notes are posted on this wine during the tasting to ensure they accurately reflect the impressions.

Vintage Description
2005 was a unique season in many ways. Most of the vineyards had a pretty tough time of it for the past 3 years with very little annual rainfall. The heavens opened up in 2005 allowing the soils to be revitalized and the vines to rebound with abundant spring growth. It was a year for careful vineyard manipulation and irrigation timing. The major issue was crop management. With this in check, we were able to produce wines with wonderful varietal fruitiness.
With a focus on producing Rhone varietals from the Westside of Paso Robles, the 2005 Syrah was selected from the best small lots, harvested from the Kiler Canyon Vineyard. The grapes were hand picked in the vineyard and then hand sorted in the winery. Each small lot was de-stemmed and crushed and fermentation was initiated with specifically selected yeast strains. Four-a-day punch-down began there after and at the end of maceration, the free run wine was separated from the press wine. Each lot was fermented and aged separately until final blending. The barrels used for each of our wines are carefully selected from artesian coopers, making barrels from the best forests within France, Eastern Europe, and America. The 2005 Syrah was aged for 15 months in new Hungarian and used French oak.
Winemaker's Tasting Notes
The 2005 Syrah is magenta red and purple in color. Dark fruits such as blackberry, cherry, & blueberry dominate the bouquet, complimented by a touch of oak spice and nutmeg. These dark fruits carry through to the mid pallet and finish with soft fruit, vanilla, oak and spice.
